PASS safety training how to use extinguishers effectively

The PASS Method: Is Your Team Actually Ready for a Fire Emergency?

When a fire breaks out, seconds matter. But recent trends in workplace safety show a concerning decline in emergency readiness. Having a fire extinguisher mounted on the wall is a strict legal requirement, but it creates a dangerous false sense of security if your staff doesn’t know how to use it when panic sets in.

The good news? Using a fire extinguisher safely and effectively comes down to four simple letters: PASS.

What is the PASS Method?

The PASS technique is the universal standard for operating a fire extinguisher. It is designed to be quick to remember and easy to execute:

  • P – Pull the pin: This releases the locking mechanism and allows you to discharge the extinguisher.
  • A – Aim low: Point the extinguisher nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not the flames. You need to hit the fuel source.
  • S – Squeeze the lever: Squeeze slowly and evenly to release the extinguishing agent.
  • S – Sweep from side to side: Move the nozzle back and forth across the base of the fire until it is completely out.

The Missing Link: Confidence and Compliance

Even with the easiest acronym in the world, two major issues prevent successful first response in commercial buildings:

  1. Equipment Failure: A fire extinguisher is useless if it’s depressurized, physically damaged, or out of date.
  2. The Panic Factor: Without hands-on familiarity, people freeze. They forget the theory and either use the equipment incorrectly or simply evacuate without attempting to stop a small, containable fire.
